The “Lux Aeterna” Project

I am putting together a virtual choir version of one of the pieces I wrote towards the end of last year. Originally I had thought of this piece for Remembrance Day, however the world-wide pandemic has changed my thinking. I have added this dedication: “For those who were lost in the 2020 Pandemic”.

Lux Aeterna

May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord,

with Thy Saints for evermore

for Thou art gracious.

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

I would like to add as many singers as have an interest in participating. Here is how all of this will work.

Learning Your Part

I have put together a recording with strings and four soloists so everyone can hear the piece. The four soloists are:

  • Catherine Gray - Soprano

  • Stephanie Code - Alto

  • DrueAnne Paschink - Tenor

  • Aaron Dimoff - Bass

Have a listen.

You can get to know your individual part by listening to one of the rehearsal recordings below.

Recording Your Part

  • It is best if you use two devices to do the recording, one for playing the audio track, and the other for the actual recording.

  • Playing the recording can be done on a computer, either with speakers or using headphones. If you use headphones, you should keep one side of the headphones off while you are singing so that you can hear both the music and yourself.

  • You can use the phone as your recording device. If it's an iPhone the app is called “Voice Memos”, and if it is an android phone the app is called “Voice Recording”.

  • You can use any of the rehearsal recordings you would like to listen to while you are doing your part. They are all from the same overall recording so it does not matter.

  • Place the phone about a foot from your mouth. It is all right if we here the recording in the background, but we obviously want your voice to be stronger than the recording.

  • When you are recording try to make sure that there are not ambient noises around - the furnace, small children or spouses randomly adding comments, the dog using his own unique singing voice…

  • Once you have a recording that you like, send it to me by email. (Click the button below or email me directly at rob.j.cairns@gmail.com

  • As well, there is no reason why you can't submit multiple recordings. Do your soprano recording, and then try out that tenor voice you've always wanted to use!

  • Why don't we aim for sending in files by the end of May so that I can assemble everything in June.

  • Thanks to all of you who decide to participate! In our own small way we can continue choir while we have to be away.
